Arriving at kindy, there is an array of activities and experiences set out ready for children to engage in. There are some consistent learning areas which give security and familiarity whilst developing fine and gross motor skills, creative experiences, and social engagement. Alongside these regular play areas, will be provocations that support current interests and working theories to support the development of learning outcomes.
These sessions are full of free play alongside more structured group times involving songs, stories, music, and games. There is a chance to observe others and participate as and when the child is ready. Self-care skills are supported, and children develop independence over time through warm, caring relationships.
Children love to stay for lunch and engage in another round of planned activities and experiences in the afternoon. After a shared fruit platter provided by all whānau, the children learn to make their own sandwiches and share time at the tables chatting, sharing, and supporting their peers.
After lunch, focussed group times give children the chance to learn skills and concepts appropriate to their developmental stages and allows teachers to further support children in their individual learning goals. If children require a rest in the afternoon, we can offer a quiet space to lie down and recharge.
A few families require just a little bit longer of a kindy day to allow time to complete work commitments and school pick-ups.
We run our day at a 1:6 ratio (legal requirement is 1:10). This gives opportunity for quality reciprocal relationships and the opportunities for teachers to plan for individual needs and small group experiences.
